Robert Fisher found his passion for knifemaking when he started making kit knives as as a hobby in a cramped workshop in his basement several years ago. The first completed kit went to his father and the balance of the completed kits went to in-laws for Christmas gifts. The recurring stumbling block for completing any further kits was the growing feeling that he wanted to create a knife from scratch, but did not know where to begin. Lots of time was spent searching forums and soliciting advice, but the lack of knowledge of forging, grinding, tempering, etching, and polishing a blade, left nagging doubts about where to begin.
Sometimes help comes from places we least expect it!
One of Robert's co-workers knew his interests and mentioned casually that he knew someone who made knives. He didn't know much about this person, but said he would try to introduce the maker to Robert. The end result of that conversation is that Robert has had the distinct pleasure of studying under ABS Mastersmith P. J. Tomes. Robert now has his own larger shop with a new Bader BIII grinder.
Much of Robert's work is using the tapered steel that he has for sale at the Tapered Steel link to the left. It is so easy to work with and makes a great blade that stays sharp and resists rust. Try some for yourself!
